Carson Workshops - Cameron Moll

October 14th, 2006

So yesterday I went to a Carson Workshop called Designing Elegant CSS Interfaces presented by Cameron Moll at a place called the Energy Clinic on Commerical Street just up the road from me in East London. To be honest I had little to no idea what to expect. I’m not a graphic designer by trade and that was clearly who the course was aimed at.

The course contained 6 hours of material from Cameron based around the following 6 areas:

  1. History of Computing UI
  2. Choosing an Approach
  3. Interface Essentials
  4. Managing Complexity
  5. CSS Proficiency
  6. Finessing Your Skills

All contained a few gems and a great many examples – either from the web or in actual code form. We also recieved a pretty comprehensive CD with all of the slides, code examples, and a few Photoshop brushes and thangs. It would be wrong of me to let more out than that (in fact the presentations on the CD ask us not to reveal anything, including on our blogs).

I gained most from the day I think in terms of the insight into the process of website design and creation. How to think a little like a designer and how to spot potential problems in a sites layout and experience – all valuable stuff.

So all in all a good day, Cameron was interesting to chat to in the breaks (as was Ryan Carson) and I think I learnt a lot I couldn’t have got anywhere else. It was well organized and the food was good. Was it worth the cash, well I guess what price do you put on knowledge?
